Sara Hochman Continues to Share Her Gift of Music

Sarah Hochman is a talented pianist. She has shared her talent joyfully with the residents of the Home both at the Kanee Centre and at the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre since 1958. She gave concerts as a soloist and on many occasions she accompanied others, both vocalists and instrumentalists. Sara was honoured by the Simkin Centre for her 50 years of volunteer service in 2009 at the Volunteer Appreciation Award Event. In 2014, she received the Shem Tov Award for her volunteerism. Today, she lives at the Simkin Centre. Pictured belowed is Sara doing what she does best, sharing her gift of music with those around her.

New Head Coverings

A big shout out of thanks to Paula & Arnold at Mitchel’s Fabric located on Main Street for their generous donation of lace to make women’s head coverings for the Stall/Gobuty Synagogue. Over the years, our supply dwindled down and we were in desperate need of new ones. The pictures below show the results of an afternoon of collaborative fashioning by Therapeutic Recreation staff, residents and volunteers.

French Toast

This morning, it was Weinberg 1’s turn to enjoy breakfast cooked in front of them in the unit dining room kitchen. French toast was on the menu. The smell of cinnimon permeated throughout the unit. One resident commented to her neighbor sitting next to her, “That was the most I’ve eaten in a long time!” Studies have found that smells stimulate the appetite. http://tinyurl.com/jxq9d6u

Our Therapeutic Recreation staff do their best to provide a home cooked “something” for residents on their unit or during programs.

The Rug

The rug you see below has been with us since 1980. It used to hang on the wall in the Atruim at the Kanee Centre. It was always a mystery as to who made the hook rug. When we moved from the Kanee Centre to the Simkin Centre in 2008, the rug was almost lost in the move. When we found it, we decided to hang it in the Tallman Multi-Purpose Room. Recently, one of our family members recognized the rug and said that his mother made it. Pictured is Evelyn Golden who made the rug and her son, Leslie Moss. A plaque was ordered and hung next to the rug. Evelyn makes sure that she tells everyone as she points to the wall that “she made that rug”.
