In 1947 the Canadian Jewish Congress, Jewish Immigration Aid Society, and the Canadian Overseas Garment Commission recognized an opportunity to improve the lives of people in displaced persons camps.
Known as The Tailor Project, this initiative brought more than 2,000 tailors from DP camps in Europe to Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal in 1948. This was the first immigration initiative that allowed Jewish families to come into the country.
The Tailor Project was transformational for many survivors of the terrors of the Holocaust and World War II but their stories remain untold. Who were the tailors? Where did they come from? What was the impact of The Tailor Project on the lives of their families?

Hyman Family Spiritual Care Fund
We would like to thank Steven Hyman, Ilana Abrams, and their children, Adam and Danielle, for establishing the Hyman Family Spiritual Care Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. The annual distribution from the Fund will help support The Simkin Centre’s Spiritual Care Program.
On behalf of the Hyman Family we would like to encourage members of the Community to consider donating to the Fund at the JFM and helping it grow.
There is a growing awareness that spirituality, or the way a person searches for meaning and purpose, hopefulness and connection, inclusive of religion, is an integral aspect of health and wellness. The Simkin Centre Spiritual Care Program is a vital aspect of the compassionate, person centred care we provide to our residents, families, and staff.
On Friday, November 2, 2018, The Simkin Centre hosted a Shabbat Dinner in the Centre’s Atrium. The Dinner served as a fundraiser for the Centre’s Spiritual Care Program. Over 75 people were in attendance.
Steven Hyman, our lay Rabbi, lead the Erev Shabbat services, with prayers also read by Selma Gilfix, Sid Halpern, and Adam Hyman, who beautifully recited the Kiddush.
The Centre’s Barb Findlay spoke about the Spiritual Care Program itself and the ways it supports our residents, family members, and staff.
Following the meal the attendees were entertained by Justin Odwalk whose singing was truly inspirational.
We would like to thank our sponsors and all those who attended in support of Spiritual Care at The Centre. A thank you as well to the volunteers (including staff) who helped make this event a success.

Laurie Cerqueti Named CEO of the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre Personal Care Home Inc.
Selma Gilfix, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre, is pleased to announce that Laurie Cerqueti has been selected as the Centre’s new Chief Executive Officer. Irwin Corobow will be leaving the position on January 11, 2019.
Laurie comes to us from Meadowood Manor as their CEO. She was responsible for overseeing all administrative functions, budgets, business-planning and care and service delivery. Under her leadership they experienced 7 consecutive years of a budget surplus, significant reduction in WCB costs, and excellent scores at the last 3 Manitoba Health Standards reviews.
After completing her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Winnipeg, she proudly embarked on her healthcare career with a Nursing Diploma from the Misericordia School of Nursing. She subsequently completed a Bachelor of Nursing Degree at the University of Manitoba and achieved a Master’s of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University.
Over the course of her professional career she has gained valuable experience as a bedside nurse, a manager and as the leader of an organization. She is committed to lifelong learning and regularly attends conferences and workshops on a variety of topics. This allows her to keep abreast of current trends and developments in healthcare in order to assist in strategically positioning the organization.
Her personal and professional beliefs and actions are a good fit for the Simkin Centre’s Mission, Vision and Philosophy. Laurie’s grandmother was a resident at the Simkin Centre. She is married and has three children. The entire family is well acquainted with the Simkin Centre.
Laurie is excited to start her new position here and we are very excited to welcome her. She will start officially on January 14, 2019.
