Simkin Centre Excels at Standards!

We are thrilled to announce that the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre achieved a 12 out of 12 on our Manitoba Health Standards Review.

These results are a true reflection of staff dedication and commitment to our residents. Reviewers complimented our team on their hard work and drive to improve the quality of care at the Centre and encouraged staff to keep up the good work.

A big thank you to our staff who worked so hard to make this happen. We are proud of this achievement.

The Manitoba Health Standards Review Process is a legislated review process which takes place every two years. Over the span of six years all 26 standards are reviewed. Nursing Services, Dietary Services, and Infection Control are just a few examples of areas that are monitored. During this process reviewers tour the facility, review resident charts, and interview residents and staff in order to make a proper determination. Tools for self-reporting are submitted and care homes are required to produce evidence indicating how they are meeting the standards. Unannounced visits are also conducted throughout the year.

This process was implemented by the province of Manitoba to ensure that Manitoba Care Homes are meeting the standards for care required by the law; and the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre strives to meet and exceed these requirements in order to provide residents with the best quality of care.

Congratulations to our Centenarians!

On December 1st, 2015 Residents of the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre celebrated a very special birthday at our Centenarian Party! Every year the Simkin Centre honours residents who are one hundred and older, and this year the Centre joined them in celebrating its one hundredth anniversary!

This year the Centre honoured Mrs. Sally Baker, Mrs. Fanny Sucharov, Mrs. Jean Wolfman, Mrs. Sarah Lapkin, Mrs. Iris Glanville, and Mrs. Lily Thomas. Congratulations on long lives, well lived!

Join us on December 1st by giving back to your community!

On December 1st your donation can directly impact quality of life for residents at the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre by supporting Complimentary Therapies like Music and Art Therapy at the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre.

Ninety percent of residents at the Simkin Centre suffer from a dementia related illness and many have barriers to mobility or communication. By participating in Complimentary Therapies residents are able to increase their enjoyment of life, communicate more clearly, and benefit from social interaction.

Our goal is to raise $7,000 toward the purchase of ipods, ipads, headphones, and speakers in order to provide residents with music that is tailored to their interests and needs. These tools can then be used by family and staff. Ipads are also useful tools for residents to video chat with family who are away from home and the tablets are used by our Therapeutic Recreation Facilitators to provide programming and activities during their group and one on one sessions.

We are also working to raise money to provide residents with more one on one and group sessions with credentialed music and art therapists.

  • $60 purchases one art or music therapy session for a resident,
  • $250 supports the purchase of one ipod plus accessories, and
  • $750 supports the purchase of on ipad plus accessories.

A donation on December 1st will help residents by restoring memory, improving social interactions, reducing pain, and providing additional caring support for our elders.
