Meet Marlene and her cat “Silkie”. Marlene and Silkie visit The Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre every Thursday. They spend approximately 1 1/2 hours visiting 3 to 5 residents. They’ve been visiting us since March 2016. While visiting with residents this week, Marlene commented that Silkie was purring more than usual while visiting residents this week. Thank you for giving us your time and sharing your special friend.

Simkin Garden Harvest Farmer’s Market Program – We are very lucky at the Simkin Centre to have some wonderful garden spaces behind the Weinberg building and the Simkin building. Every year the recreation staff plant those spaces with some of our residents. What are some of the things we plant? Tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, beans, carrots, dill, radishes, kohlrabi, onions and sometimes fruit.
Then we enjoy charting the progress of the fruits of our labour when we go outside to enjoy our warm summer days. When the garden is ready, we harvest our bounty and create wonderful things to eat.
At the Farmer’s Market program, the following recreation staff were introduced, representing the following locations: Alissa from Altona, Olga from Oak Bluff, Lydia from Lorette, Shelley from Stonewall and Shannon from St. Frances Xavier.

He calls himself the “Music Man”. Abe is a family member who generously volunteers at the Simkin Centre. Once a month he digs into his music library and picks music that will go with the program he is helping with. Pictured below is Abe playing background music for the Mexican Fiesta party that took place last week. At the party, residents enjoyed their homemade salsa and chips. See the link below. A big thank you to Abe for creating a music filled environment for residents and staff. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. http://www.simkincentre.ca/mexican-fiesta-and-salsa-making/

$113.25 – We just emptied the change box located at the Garden Cafe and that is how much was donated. Thanks to all who put some of your extra change in the box. This money will go to our Therapeutic Recreation and Spiritual Care Departments.
