Simkin Centre Celebrates 100 Years with Walk to Raise Funds for Therapeutic Recreation
Community shows how much they care at the Simkin Stroll!
Every year the community gathers to celebrate healthy aging at the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre. On June 14th residents of the Centre will gather with their friends and family for the Simkin Stroll, a walk in support of the Therapeutic Recreation Program.
Our residents experience a high incidence of barriers to mobility and 80 to 90% suffer from a dementia related illness.
Therapeutic Recreation Services engage the body, mind, and imagination by providing enriching life experiences regardless of barriers to health. Based on individual assessments, each resident has a plan for involvement with Therapeutic Recreation. Planned programs include one to one, and small or large group sessions. Therapeutic Recreation staff organize exercise sessions, discussion groups, games nights, cultural events, and many more options that offer familiar experiences for residents. Folk song sing-a-longs and baking sessions are just a few of the programs that they organize. Evening and weekend Therapeutic Recreation Programs are not covered by health care funding and are only possible with the support of our caring community.
Last year the Centre had to cut back on weekend and evening Therapeutic Recreation Programs due to a lack of funding. Our goal this year is to raise $25,000 toward these essential services.
This year the Stroll has already raised $12,000 toward these programs and we anticipate a great turnout the day of the event! If we can raise the full $25,000 it will mean an improvement to our evening and weekend programming as well as additional support for our residents who have more significant care requirements.
This year the Simkin Centre is also celebrating its 100th Anniversary! We are inviting the community to join them for this neighbourhood stroll in support of the residents of the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre.
